Rainfall and excess irrigation carry excess fertilizers and excess pesticides into our waterways.
- These waterways eventually flow to our coastal estuaries.
- This non-point source pollution -- or pointless personal pollution -- dramatically affects water quality in the our coastal areas.
- Other National Estuary Programs in Florida have identified non-point source stormwater runoff as the source of 80% of the contaminants entering the coastal estuaries
The Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Program (FY&N) teaches environmental landscape management practices.
- FY&N encourages homeowners to water efficiently, mulch, recycle, select the least toxic pest control measures, put the right plant in the right spot, fertilize only when necessary, and to minimize stormwater runoff.
Trained volunteer Yard Advisers help homeowners to adopt new yard maintenance practices.
FY&N honors model landscapes as certified Florida Yards.
FY&N is a program of the University of Florida Cooperative Extension Service.
FY&N is funded by:
- Local county support
- Florida Water Management Districts
- National Estuary Programs
- Florida Department of Environmental Protection
- United States Environmental Protection Agency
