After nearly 10 -productive years as a lead climatologist and ecologist at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Nigeria, I have now joined the University of Florida where I conduct applied research on climate forecast, global warming, and climate change impact on agriculture.   Here are some of the things I've recently accomplished:

¨       Member of a multi-university and stakeholder consortium that developed products to provide climate forecast information and economic risk management products for agriculture and forest wildfires.

¨       Lead author on two recently concluded US national studies on impact of global warming and climate change on crops productivity looking at the risks and opportunities.

¨       Lead author of report on climate change impact on Agriculture for the National Resource Defense Council and Atlanta Journal of Constitution

Before returning to the University of Florida in 1998, I worked at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) as a principle climatologist, ecologist and head of Agroecological Studies Unit at IITA.  As the key-scientists for IITA’s climate and ecological research, my achievements included:

¨       Launching a global activities on geo-referencing and mapping IITA’s genetic resources and linked them to GIS databases. This remarkably improved IITA’s capability of distributing improved seeds throughout Africa, and successfully targeting resource management technologies to solve specific problems.

¨       Installed natural resource knowledge management systems throughout West Africa, and was responsible for providing technical and strategic leadership for development of sustainable initiatives/projects. One of such initiatives, Inland Valley Consortium established in 1992, is still functional on external donor funding.

¨       Solicited, negotiated and managed several project to inventory natural resources in West Africa, document evolutionary trends in agricultural systems, and advised students who conducted integrated climate change policy related studies.  The databases developed lead to the definition of agroecological zones and identification of the Benchmark Sites in the ecoregional programs conducted by IITA in West Africa.

¨       As a past president of the Nigerian Meteorological Society, I successfully organized professional to debate and documents climate change impact on agriculture.

Prior to joining CGIAR in 1989, I was a member of an international group of research institutes and universities that were involved in the development of tools to study impact of global warming and climate change on crops.

¨       Conducted pioneering research on crop responses to varying levels of carbon dioxide ranging from 160 to 990 parts per million, which lead to the development of predictive models for water consumption as well as crop production.

¨      Contributed to the developed a tool-kit consisting of crop yield simulation models, risk analysis and weather generator – known widely as the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT). DSSAT allows assessment of contribution of agricultural technologies in a transparent manner to enable farmers to be more productive.

¨      I have authored and co-authored over 140 publications on sustainable natural resource management, production agricultural assessment, biodiversity, global warming and climate change, risk analysis, and statistical data mining. In addition, I have held teaching and research positions at the University of Hawaii, University of Florida, and several community colleges in the USA.

¨      I received Ph. D. from the University of Florida (1986), M.S. from the University of Georgia, and B. Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. I am a member of several professional societies, and serves as reviewer for many scientific publications and books.

Professional Career

·        2002-Present Visiting Scholar (Uni. of Florida): Plan and conduct multidisciplinary research on the applications of  the El Niño/Southern Oscillation and its influence on crops and nutrients, the analysis and display of climate information, the influence of uncertainty in environmental inputs on regional crop yield predictions and the impact of global climate change on agriculture. I play significant research role in SECC efforts to efficiently utilize climate forecast produced by the Florida State University’s coupled global and regional climate models with crop models, through maximizing the accuracy of the forecasts, streamlining and automating the utilization of forecast, and facilitating the creation of seasonal crop outlook tailored to specific crops and regions within the SE USA.  These activities are expected to lead to developing decision analysis framework to promote integrated crop management practices that can reduce vulnerability of the society from climate related disasters.

·        1998-2001 Visiting Scholar (Uni. of Florida): Conducted research on climate change impacts on crops and water resources. It involved a detailed assessment of projected climate change on agricultural productivity and water requirements in the SE USA and a semi-detailed one for the entire USA. Several key data and methodology issues were identified as key constraints in predicting agricultural responses to climate variability

·        1997-1998 Courtesy Professor, Systems Analysis and GIS, University of Florida. Developed and implemented memorandum of understanding for joint research, appropriate technology transfer, and capacity building through training between the University of Florida, the Int. Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan (Nigeria), and its member countries in sub Saharan Africa

·        1989-1998.  Conducted research on rainfed agricultural systems to assist in development of improved varieties and management systems for rainfed agriculture. Conducted on-station and on-farm agronomic research involving major cropping systems in the region (maize, soybean, cowpea, millet, sorghum and cassava) to measure their responses to fertilizer, water and management across a gradient of ecologies. This lead to research priority setting and development of appropriate technologies that significantly contributed to food security in Africa.

·        1996 Adjunct Professor, Guiding Advanced Degree seeking African Scientist from Ghana at the Dep. Of Soil Science, University Of Saskatoon, Canada

·        1989-1998. Brought the rich tradition in the use of computer modeling and simulation for resource management in Africa. Supervised 89-Ph. D. and 3-M.S. thesis in Africa, Europe and USA in agronomy, climatology, geography, land-use, plant physiology, and physics.

·        1996 –1998.  President of the Nigerian Meteorological Professionals Society. Promoted communication among meteorological, agricultural, water resources, and live stock sectors.  Motivated and brought together a multi-disciplinary team of leading professionals and people from inter-agencies to produce an integrated assessment of potential impact of climate change on food and water security and human welfare in West Africa.

·        1996-1998. Executive Member of the Nigerian Meteorological Society.  Coordinated preparation, publication, and developing a science based agenda for society to serve regions needs

·        1990-1998 Consultant to FAO, WMO, ODA, and other clients

Developed decision support system linked to GIS to guide research and development of ecological and economic compatible intensive natural resource use throughout humid and savanna regions of west and central Africa.  Scientist and scientific leaders in West and Central Africa were brought together to develop a shared vision and common agenda. Several benchmark areas were established in key countries by pulling together resources from countries, international organizations and donors to jointly tackle agricultural land degradation issues.

·        1992 – 1994 Head of Agroecology & Senior Climatologist, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan, Nigeria. Mobilized national and International donors to support multidisciplinary teams of scientists in Central (Gabon, Congo, Zaire, Eq. Guinea, Cameroon) and West (Nigeria, Rep.
