Natural Wetland Treatment Systems

Abstract

Over the past two decades, natural wetlands have been used as treatment systems throughout the United States and during this time, natural wetland treatment technology has developed. In this paper, three unique natural wetland treatment systems representative of the diversity of this emerging technology are described. At the Orange County Florida Eastern Service Area, an experimental wetlands wastewater treatment system was established as part of an integrated reuse program. At the Orange County Florida Landfill, dilute leachate mixed with stormwater is discharged to North Wide Cypress Swamp for treatment and wetland restoration. In Escambia County Florida, the Bayou Marcus Wetlands Restoration System has been designed to provide restoration to a 1000-acre wetland site through wastewater reuse.
