LAKE OKEECHOBEE is the major hydrologic feature of southern Florida. The upstream watershed begins in central Florida near Orlando, and the Lake supplies water resources downstream via the Everglades marsh to urban south Florida and to Florida Bay. Water quality in the Lake has declined steadily for the last 40 years due to urban development, channelization of the Kissimmee River, and the growth of intensive agro-business. |
